Summary
New investment opportunities are expected to appear in Cameroon’s telecoms market in 2010. It is reported that a third entrant is likely to enter the mobile market. There are ongoing efforts to privatise fixed line incumbent Camtel. The mobile market is attractive in Cameroon as it is home to only two operators: MTN Cameroon and Orange Cameroon. As a result of limited competition, tariffs have remained higher than in comparable countries in the region, limiting penetration growth. As a result, the market is ripe for strong growth.
Camtel on the other hand has not been an attractive enough proposition so far for potential bidders, with offers rejected by the government as insufficient. Should the government decide to grant Camtel spectrum for mobile services, the government may be able to jointly attract a new entrant and privatise Camtel.
This report considers the potential for a third mobile licensee to enter Cameroon’s mobile market, whether or not this involves the acquisition of Camtel. It describes and analyses the current state of the telecoms market in Cameroon, with a focus on the mobile market. The report then provides forecasts for the mobile market, separating out the potential for new entrant, over the next ten years. The report analyses the strategies necessary for a new entrant to gain a share of the market, given the market dynamics present in Cameroon. Finally, a number of recommendations are made for potential investors.
